In the next two decades, the world population will increase significantly; the majority in the developing countries located in the tropics of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. To feed such a population, it is necessary to increase the availability of food, particularly high-value animal protein foods produced locally, namely meat and dairy products. Dairy production in tropical regions has a lot of growth potential, but also poses a series of problems, particularly as dairy production systems were developed in temperate countries and in most cases are difficult to implement in the tropics. Drawbacks include hot weather and heat stress, the lack of availability of adequate feeds, poor infrastructure, and cold chain and the competition with cheap imports from temperate countries. This position paper reviews the major drawbacks in dairy production for the five major dairy species: cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goat, and camel, as well as the future trends in research and development. It also concerns the major trends in reproduction and production systems and health issues as well as environmental concerns, particularly those related to greenhouse gas emissions. Tropical Animal Health and Production now launches a topical collection on Tropical Dairy Science. We aim to publish interesting and significant papers in tropical dairy science. On behalf of the editorial board of the Tropical Animal Health and Production, we would like to invite all authors working in this field to submit their works on this topic to this topical collection in our journal.

A molecular epidemiologic investigation in two Brazilian states (Rondônia and São Paulo) was undertaken to determine if Ehrlichia species responsible for human and animal ehrlichioses in North America could be found in Brazilian vectors, potential natural mammalian reservoirs and febrile human patients with a tick bite history. Samples, including 376 ticks comprising 9 Amblyomma species, 29 capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) spleens, 5 canine blood, and 75 human blood samples from febrile patients with history of tick bites were tested by a real-time PCR assay targeting a fragment of the Ehrlichia dsb gene. Ehrlichia DNA was not detected in any tick, capybara or human samples. In contrast, 4 out of 5 dogs contained Ehrlichia canis DNA in their blood, which were sequenced, representing the first report of E. canis infecting dogs in the Amazon region of Brazil. Further studies are needed to evaluate the presence of other agents of human and animal ehrlichioses in Brazil. 相似文献
Selection of oat genotypes combining earliness and short plant height could stimulate oat cultivation worldwide. However, the mechanisms involved with the genetic control of heading date and plant height traits are not fully understood to date. This study aimed to identify genomic regions controlling heading date and plant height in two hulled by naked oat populations and to compare these genomic regions with that of other grass species. Recombinant inbred lines of each population and their parents were genotyped by a 6 K BeadChip Illumina Infinium array and assessed for heading date and plant height in two sowing dates. The quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting these traits were detected by simple interval mapping. The two oat populations showed different genetic mechanisms controlling heading date. A major QTL was identified in one of the populations, mapped into the ‘Mrg33’ consensus linkage group from the current oat map. Two other QTL were detected into the ‘Mrg02’ and ‘Mrg24’ groups, in the second population. On the other hand, both populations presented the same genomic region controlling plant height. Six SNP markers, mapping on the same linkage group within each population, were associated with the trait, regardless the sowing date, explaining more than 20% of the phenotypic variation. Five of these six markers were mapped into three different linkage groups on the oat consensus map. Genomic regions associated with heading date and plant height in oat seem to be conserved in Oryza sativa L. and Brachypodium distachyon. Our results provide valuable information for marker-assisted selection in oats, allowing selection for earliness and plant height on early segregating generations. 相似文献
Genetically diverse germplasm is needed to increase frequency of favorable alleles of economically important traits in maize improvement. The objectives of this study were to determine the genetic components involved in grain yield and grain quality traits, and provide preliminary assessment of useful heterotic groups and patterns from a large sample of maize populations adapted to the northern U.S. Corn Belt. Sixteen populations were used in the diallel mating design following Gardner–Eberhart Analysis II to estimate variety (vi) and heterosis (hij) genetic effects for grain yield and grain quality traits. Specific heterosis (sij) and predicted means of population crosses for grain yield were used to evaluate the heterotic relationships among the populations. Data for grain yield and grain quality traits were generated in partially balanced single lattice experiments across North Dakota (ND) locations in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Analyses of variance showed significant differences among genotypes. Heterosis effects explained most of the differences among diallel entries for grain yield, while vi effects had greater influence on grain quality traits. NDL, EARLYGEM 21c, NDSCD(FS-CS)C2, NDSS, and NDSM(M-FS)C9 were identified as elite populations for grain quality improvement. NDSS × NDBS22(R-T1)C9 and NDBS1011 × EARLYGEM 21c showed high sij effects for grain yield with good grain quality. NDSS and EARLYGEM 21c represent stiff stalk synthetic (SSS) group, and NDBS1011 fall under non-SSS group. Further studies need to validate the heterotic group of NDBS22(R-T1)C9. Recurrent and pedigree selection programs will be established for selected populations and population crosses to integrate pre-breeding with cultivar development. 相似文献
